Trump vs. Tester

Jon Tester, Democratic Senator from Montana, says it would have been a "dereliction of duty" for him not to investigate the accusation against Dr. Ronny Jackson. I agree with him and that’s why I also agree with President Trump that Tester should resign.

What Tester did does not comport with what he himself claims his duty to be. Rather than investigate the claims in a serious fashion, he threw the untested accusations to the court of public opinion leaving Jackson and anyone supportive of him scrambling to respond.

Jackson is a Navy Admiral and doctor who served three presidents as White House physician. He was Trump's pick to head the Veterans Affairs Administration. Jackson withdrew from consideration in the wake of the accusation publicized by Tester, which included allegations of drinking, over-prescribing drugs, and creating a hostile work environment.

In the few days since Tester aired the rumors, it has come to light that Jackson has an unimpeachable record. Certain specific accusations were directly refuted by the Secret Service and the GSA. These refutations were so thorough as to cast complete doubt on all others.

The duty that accompanies authority is a tightrope. On one hand, serious allegations of impropriety should not be ignored. On the other hand, frivolous ones absolutely should. It is up to the one in authority to exercise the necessary discretion.

Tester has access to resources to examine the claims brought to him without a public brouhaha. He failed the test, so to speak. Oh, he got what he wanted—Jackson’s withdrawal—in dastardly fashion. But he’s been caught out as a base gossip.

Trump is right that Tester should resign. Tester has shown himself derelict in his duties by his own standard. And should he fail to resign, the people of Montana should absolutely enforce resignation upon him this November.
